ALEXANDRA PARK – 2 hour tour through the historical estate of Black and White houses ending with coffee & pastries at one of the houses. Additional take home of a Black & White coffee table book.
 
This 2 hour walking tour delves into the architectural features of this beautiful Estate’s
iconic houses as well as their history, and the lifestyle of the people who lived here in the past. They were built primarily for British Army officers from Alexandra and Gillman Barracks, as well as medical personnel employed in the nearby Alexandra Military Hospital.
There are several different types of black & white houses in Alexandra Park, the earliest
dating from 1905, but the majority built in the 1920s & 1930s. Mostly neo classical
buildings in style, there are also a few examples of tropical Art Deco with its streamlined
appearance and flat roofs. Some of the houses here are special in that due to the hilly
terrain, they were built on pillars of varying heights.
After our walk we’ll end for coffee & pastries at one of these lovely houses where you’ll be able to appreciate the gracious living with which they are associated. Take home a beautiful illustrated coffee table book to remind you of these impressive houses.
